The 1990s are marked by further normalization and closer economic co-operation. Youth exchanges and town twinnings help deepen relations. During this period, the relations between the two countries gain an even stronger European perspective. Whereas before, the centre of attention was on defusing the conflict of belonging to different military blocs, now the focus shifts to creating a joint future in Europe.
