Library of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation

Hochschulbibliothekszentrum NRW (HBZ)
[NRW University Library Centre]

The FES Library cooperated with the Hochschulbibliothekszentrum NRW (HBZ) [North Rhine Westphalia University Library Centre] from the late 1970s onwards. From 1979, the Friedrich Ebert Foundation had been financing the integration into the then central catalogue in Cologne with its own staff appropriations (one qualified staffer for two years). This heralded the library's establishment as a large and significant library of national importance. At first, the integration covered monographs and periodicals. Only when the ZDB "grew" to be a national referencing tool, this reference was not updated in Cologne any longer. In the following years, the conventional cards that our library sent to Cologne were updated there with a high degree of completeness. Early during the incorporation of the periodicals inventories into the ZDB, the HBZ supported the Friedrich Ebert Foundation Library in many ways. The conventional input sheets were entered online into the ZDB data base at the HBZ. After the introduction of electronic data processing at the Friedrich Ebert Foundation Library, the HBZ was not able to enter the data offline despite great efforts. Therefore our library had to go its own way in order to make our inventories "visible" on a national level. Due to the conversion of the old card catalogues into the HBZ data base, the library receives many orders from that region even today.
