More Telstra Regional Job Cuts
Lindsay Tanner - Shadow Minister for Communications
|
Media Statement - 15 December 2003
Telstra plans to axe around 80 jobs in regional Victoria and New South Wales. 58 jobs are being axed in Hamilton and Horsham in Victoria and 22 in Tamworth, NSW, as part of Telstra's call centre closures.
Telstra claims to be committed to regional Australia but is axing these permanent jobs in regional Australia. It appears the work is being transferred to outsourced operations in Wollongong, Perth and Burnie where the workforce is casualised.
Government members John Forrest and David Hawker must take a stand and defend these jobs and their communities from Telstra cut backs. Mr Forrest and Mr Hawker both voted to sell Telstra in the Parliament in August. Now it appears they are also happy to let Telstra behave like a fully privately owned company and strip permanent jobs from their electorates. Telstra has slashed over 6,000 staff in just two years and many of these have been rural technicians and regional call centre staff. Telstra claims to support regional and rural Australia but is deserting small regional centres. Telstra must reconsider these job cuts.
