Minister Hardgrave’s Comments Beneath Contempt

Julia Gillard - Shadow Minister for Population and Immigration

Media Statement - 29 August 2002

Minister Hardgrave today issued a bizarre media release, hot on the heels of his bizarre behaviour in the House last night.

The Minister used Standing Orders to extend the adjournment debate by ten minutes in order to use the House as a forum for petty and vindictive allegations against Labor members.

I remind the Minister that free speech and freedom of association are cornerstones of any democracy and Australians are allowed to freely discuss all the issues to which he refers without fearing that a view at odds with Government policy should have them besmirched by the Minister.

The comments of Minister Hardgrave, both within and outside the House, are offensive and wrong. His statements are particularly disturbing given the portfolio he holds.
