Greek credit rating Junk Status is the cost of Merkel playing domestic politics on international stage

Poul Nyrup Rasmussen

The downgrading of Greece’s sovereign credit rating to junk status is an indictment of Angela Merkel’s ‘policy of prevarication’. France and Germany must change strategy on the economic crisis

Nicolas Sarkozy, Angela Merkel

PES President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen called on German and French leaders to remember their role in the EU, at a high level Commission conference on the way out of the economic crisis. He also spoke of the PES plan for the Greek crisis. The PES President had received good support from German colleagues at an SPD conference in Berlin, the previous week. On 27 April, the European Commission presented its proposal (part I and part II) on the integrated guidelines for growth and jobs. The so called ‘integrated guidelines’ fails to give clear directions on a way out of the crisis for those hardest hit. The PES Ministers and State Secretaries in charge of the General Affairs Council met on 25 April to discuss these issues, on the basis of PES draft position papers on the Europe 2020 strategy and the Integrated Guidelines.

Green vehicles for a sustainable future

Green car

Increasing the number of electric cars on Europe’s road will not only contribute to combating climate change, but it is a unique opportunity for European companies to increase their competitiveness and to generate new growth. On 28 April, the European Commission adopted a Communication on a European Strategy on Clean and Energy Efficient Vehicles.
