Library of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation

Publications of the FES Library

One of the duties of a scientific specialist library is to document and publish the literature of its area of collection emphasis. Traditionally, these are bibliographic indexes of individual subject groups, directories of specialized collections or lists of so-called "grey literature" not indexed in the national bibliography. You will find a list of Printed and Digital Library Publications here (in German language):

Periodical publications

The "Bibliographie zur Geschichte der deutschen Arbeiterbewegung" (Bibliography on the History of the German Labour Movement), a Friedrich Ebert Foundation Library "classic", constitutes one of the Library's periodical literature documentations. This ongoing bibliography has been published since 1976, quarterly at first, now, since 1988, once a year. It contains title references for all monographs and articles published in the field of the German labour movement, Marxism research, the German trade union movement and the history of German social democracy. Since 1995, there has been a rewarding cooperation between the FES Library and the Library of the Archive of the Parties and Mass Organisations of the GDR Foundation (SAPMO) at the Federal Archives in Berlin. The SAPMO Library provides the bibliography with those monographs and articles from Eastern Europe, Scandinavia as well as grey literature from the former East German states which have the German labour movement as their topic.

The bibliography "Veröffentlichungen der Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung" (Publications by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation) is nearly as old. Its precursors date back to 1979, since when it has been appearing yearly, containing some 700 to 900 monographs published by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation's head office, its educational centres and its domestic and foreign offices. Some of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation publications listed in this bibliography are available as full text on the Internet.

Further bibliographies are “Schriften zur ausländischen Arbeiterbewegungin der Bibliothek der Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung” [Publications on the foreign labour movement in the Library of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation] (since 1978), “Publications of political parties and trade unions”, (“grey literature”) since 1991 divided into “Veröffentlichungen deutscher Parteien und Gewerkschaften in der Bibliothek der Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung [Publications of German parties and trade unions in the Library of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation]” and “Veröffentlichungen ausländischer Parteien und Gewerkschaften in der Bibliothek der Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung” [Publications of foreign political parties and trade unions in the Library of the Friedric Ebert Foundation]. The function of these two latter bibliographies is to complement the national bibliography, which does not fully document this sector of literature. Since 1998, all three bibliographies have been appearing as electronic publications within the Digital Library project.

Individual Publications

A large number of bibliographical documentations of literature was drawn up besides the periodical bibliographies. These bibliographies can focus on individual topics within the main area of collection or subjects such as the workers' sport movement, workers' movement book clubs, the workers' cultural movement and the proletarian women's movement Author bibliographies have also been published on the occasion of the anniversary of certain persons' birthdays, for instance for Susanne Miller, Willy Brandt, Helmut Schmitt and Holger Börner. Inventory bibliographies were created whenever the Friedrich Ebert Foundation Library took over entire specialized collections.

The Digital Library

In this age of electronic information, the Library's documentary activities are also subject to profound changes. Besides the digital catalogue and the three access lists, other projects of this Digital Library also go far beyond the traditionally established services of a specialized library's literature documentation services. The Library offers a rapidly growing number of the Foundation's own publications in full text.
